The Storefront:
Sensing that the funky and artsy neighborhood of Los Feliz was ripe for a cool baby boutique, owner Ling Chan jumped on the opportunity to lease a storefront on the bustling block of Vermont Ave. which she could transform into an ultra-hip hub of fashion, arts and culture for tots. Sandwiched between the Los Feliz 3 movie theater, Skylight Books and the hip Cafe Figaro, La La Ling is in the perfect hub of Los Feliz foot traffic.
Up until April of 2007, La La Ling also offered multi-cultural and baby classes in languages, arts and music...classes like Toddler Spanish & Art, Baby Sign Language and Kindermusik all have a cultural beat to teach your child that there’s life outside of Hollywood. People aren’t one dimensional, so why does your baby have to shop or think that way? And to help out all you busy L.A parents on the go, La La Ling is also a one-stop shop for a wide range of personal services such as birth announcements and personal shopping for any occasion’s gift baskets.
While LaLaLing.com shows you many of the wonderful things for sale at the store, we hope you can come to our store to experience the full concept of La La Ling as it is a total FUN experience of the very latest in kids fashion, furnishings, accessories, toys and gifts. Or from the comfort of your own home, just sit back and enjoy your La La Ling online shopping experience!
The Owner / Ling Chan:
After a 12-year career in the entertainment industry, Ling decided to leave her studio job at Warner Bros. where she marketed movies around the world and dive headfirst into childrens’ retail. As a mother of two boys at the time, Ling had spent her free time schlepping about town searching for the latest pint-sized fashion finds and baby classes where her children could have a blast and stimulate their minds. Not wanting to settle, she knew L.A. needed something fresh and different on the baby scene, and she knew she was the person to do this. Thus began the adventure of creating a cutting-edge boutique where her lifestyle could fuse with her passions and inspirations: awesome fashion, multi-cultural activities and her love for music and the arts.
Ling lives in Los Angeles with her two sons, Finn & Ty, daughter Pearl and husband, screenwriter/director John Gatins.
Director of Administration & Sales and Website Development / Sharon Jensen
A retail goddess by day and an actress by night when she performs improv and sketch comedy, Sharon brings her comedic talents to all the appreciative customers of La La Ling. Having moved here from NYC, Sharon lives in neighboring Silverlake.
Sales Associate / Kimberly Easter
Kimberly is a native of Kansas City, KS and a recent graduate from Webster Conservatory with a BFA in Acting. She recently relocated to Los Angeles to pursue a career in acting. Until she stars on Broadway, she’ll be performing weekly shows at La La Ling!
Sales Associate / Celine Vacher
Celine moved here from Paris at age 10, and she's been enjoying L.A. ever since! Her friendly smile brightens up La La Ling five days a week, and when she's not here she's singing her heart out. When she gets a Grammy, we'll say we knew her when!
The Art & Art Programming:
Known for her brilliant and bold work in public art around Los Angeles, as well as teaching the popular "Living With Art" course with UCLA Extension, Michelle Isenberg handles the art programming for the store. She advised Ling Chan to commission artist Christina Ulke, an artist known for her work in the public domain. In Christina’s work the Council of the Animals, a large-scale digital print on the ceiling of the store, the animals of the South Asian Rainforest are holding a council. Attending are the Asian Elephant, the Proboscis Monkey, Tree Frog, Rafflesia, the world’s largest flower and many more. Sitting above in a Victorian constellation, their style reminds us of the era which sprouted South East Asia’s rubber plantations around 1896. Interrupting their council is an explosion of 3D pacifiers, scattering out into the world like the current economic system. One by one the animals talk of their present situations as endangered animals. But the Orangutan tells his friends that good news is on its way….
